Protesting the handling of floods, demonstrators asked the mayor to shove his position

Demonstrations staged by residents of the city of Sorong, West Papua, Thursday 30 July 2020, were in chaos.

The riots occurred when the police tried to extinguish the fire from a used tire that was set on fire by demonstrators in front of the loby room of the mayor's office building, on pigeon street number 1, north remu village.

A number of demonstrators were seen trying to block the police. As a result, there was pushing and clashing.

Two police officers were reportedly injured by blunt force beatings, while two demonstrators were stationed at the nearest police headquarters.

Demonstrations were held to protest the slow progress of the city government in anticipating and dealing with floods, which have caused insignificant material losses, and even killed 7 people in the past two weeks.

Demonstrators also protested the city government of Sorong which was deemed not to arrange its territory, resulting in the emergence of waste problems, to the drainage of water and rivers that were not well ordered.

Therefore, demonstrators consisting of youth groups, students, and the community asked the Mayor of Sorong to resign from his position.

In this action, demonstrators also brought a number of electronic equipment that was damaged by flooding. The demonstration called on the city government to take responsibility for damage to the equipment.
