Russia has completed trials for a COVID-19 vaccine and plans to roll out mass vaccinations in October.

According to Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko, doctors and teachers will be the first to receive this vaccine, and it is planned that it will be sent to other Russian regions from August 10.

Murashko added that a second Russian vaccine is currently in the process of clinical tests.

Since the pandemic began, 851,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Russia and 14,128 have died, which places it in fourth place worldwide for the number of infections, surpassed by the United States, Brazil and India.

STORYLINE:

Clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Russia's "Gamalei" National Center for Epidemiological and Microbiological Research have been completed and the registration phase is beginning, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko reported.

"The vaccine against the new coronavirus developed by the Gamalei center has completed clinical trials and documents are now being prepared for registration," said Murashko, quoted by TASS.

According to the Minister of Health, doctors and teachers will be the first to receive this vaccine, and it is planned that it will be sent to the Russian regions from August 10.

"We plan to have the broader vaccination campaign, which will gradually be added to the new care system, begin in October," he said.

The minister added that the second Russian vaccine, developed by the Vector center, is currently in the process of clinical tests and stated that the Ministry of Health expects "in the next month and a half or two months" to receive two other requests for permission to conducting clinical trials of new vaccines.

The day before, the leading epidemiologist in the United States, Anthony Fauci, said he hopes China and Russia "are really testing" the Covid-19 vaccines they develop "before giving them to anyone."

Fauci made these remarks after Russian authorities indicated the upcoming approval of the new coronavirus vaccine, ahead of the United States.
