Southern Masked Weavers (Ploceus velatus) are a common and widespread weaver that is near endemic in southern Africa. This breeding male was busy constructing one of his exquisite woven nests from strips of fresh grass that he had harvested below the nest. The nest is on the end of a spiny Buffalo Thorn (Ziziphus mucronata) twig that provides it some protection from predators. After a while he dropped onto the twigs below his nest and stripped their leaves from them- I am not sure why. After a short while he returned to his nest, hanging upside down displaying in the hope of attracting a female.
