Trafalgar Square fourth plinth swirl of ice cream sculpture unveiled
The new art installation on the fourth plinth at Trafalgar Square – which is used as a rolling exhibition of public artworks – was unveiled on Thursday 30th July.
The art work called ‘The End’ was created by British artist Heather Philipson and will remain on the fourth plinth until spring 2022.
The art work is an ice cream with a cherry on top and both a drone and fly attached. The public will be able to use their phones to live-stream what the camera equipped drone can see.
Speaking about the unveiling on Thursday Ms Phillipson said "Obviously it's a strange time to be doing anything right now. But it also felt like it was never going to be the right time so maybe it was the right time to just let it happen.”
"I came up with the idea in 2016 which was already, for me, quite a tricky political moment.”
"This feels like a continuation of that - the idea of something being on the verge of collapse. The pandemic attunes them to a slightly higher frequency."
Ms Phillipson further commented that the sculpture was not necessarily meant to be "pessimistic" but was also "hopeful" and signalled a "chance of radical change".
The 31ft tall sculpture will be in place until Spring 2022.
