Incredible footage of a giraffe fight was captured in Kruger National Park.
The clip, filmed on August 5, shows the two giraffes knocking their heads into each other's necks before the alpha male knocks the other down and kneels on his body.
The filmer, Edrich, told Newsflare: "The whole ordeal lasted around 45 minutes and ended with the dominant male walking after the defeated male until he exited his so-called territory. The defeated giraffe was badly injured and will be left with serious battle scars for the rest of his life, reminding him of this devastating fight he had to face."
It was early afternoon in a camp in the Greater Kruger National Park, when I suddenly heard a soft explosion like sound in the distant bush. I went to a lookout point to see what made that noise. In the distance I saw a large number of giraffes roaming the plains in front of the camp. Among the many giraffes I spotted two males standing with opposite sides closely together. Immediately I realized that these two males were locked in battle that is known as necking and the explosion sound I heard came from the blows they were serving each other.
I decided to grab my vehicle and drive around to the front for a closer look. I relocated the two male giraffes, still standing against each other. The majority of territorial necking battles between male giraffes are graceful and slow, with one male usually giving up in the end to avoid the risk of injury. When I started filming these two giraffe bulls, I quickly realized this fight was definitely no gentle affair and these two giraffes meant serious business. Instead of only using the swing of their necks, these two males added an even more dangerous tactic by hitting each other with their skulls. These backward throws of the head repeatedly hit the opponent on the junction between its skull and spine. I could clearly see one giraffe already had an open wound on that spot behind the head. In between a few neck sweeps, the backward head blows continued until one male giraffe was knocked out. The male giraffe fell to the floor like a sack of potatoes, lights out. I was totally stunned by what I saw. The standing giraffe placed his one foot on top of his fallen opponent’s body, looking like he was making a statement that he was in charge. The fallen giraffe was still breathing heavily. For the next fifteen minutes, the victorious giraffe bent down several times to sniff at his fallen opponent while at other moments he was tapping his opponent with his one foot. Initially I thought he was checking whether his opponent was alive and well. My perception on this point totally changed when things took and even more unexpected turn.
I managed to reposition my vehicle to another angle for a better view. During that time, the badly injured giraffe amazingly lifted his neck from the ground while still lying down. I started filming again, thinking that we were entering the end of this battle which had a clear winner. All of a sudden, the standing giraffe lost it again, swinging at his opponent with his head. The already defeated giraffe takes another three massive blows, last one hits the spine, and boom, knocked out for a second time. I could not believe what I was watching. Again, the standing male giraffe victoriously stood with his one foot on his fallen opponents’ body. This time the fallen giraffe was out for over twenty minutes. During this time there was the same behavior from the standing giraffe, smelling at his victim and putting one of his hoofs on top of its body. I realized this time round that he was not so much checking if his opponent was OK, but more wanted him to get back up and continue fighting. I honestly thought that the fallen giraffe was not going to make it. After some twenty minutes passed, the fallen giraffe made a remarkable recovery and quickly got back onto his feet. I really thought this was now game over, but no, the dominant giraffe decided it was not over yet. Another five serious body blows were handed out by the dominant giraffe, making sure his opponent got the message one more time. I was totally gobsmacked to see the defeated giraffe taking those last five body blows and remaining on his feet, after all it has been through. The whole ordeal lasted around forty-five minutes and ended with the dominant male walking after the defeated male until he exited his so called territory. The defeated giraffe was badly injured and will be left with serious battle scars for the rest of his life, reminding him of this devastating fight he had to face.
