Hundreds of car enthusiasts descended upon a retail park in Derby, UK despite coronavirus warnings.

Footage filmed on August 9 shows crowds arriving at Meteor Centre Retail Park to view the supercars and racing cars on show.

Derbyshire police monitored the event and eventually began locking gates and blocking access to the retail park, according to the filmer.

Car clubs from across the UK attended the event with some coming from as far as Yorkshire.

The event had been planned last month in Stoke-on-Trent but police threatened anyone who attended would be fined and possibly have their car confiscated.

A Derby car club member suggested the Meteor Centre location was announced at the last minute on Facebook.

Despite coronavirus rules and restrictions 100s of "boy racers" and car enthusiasts descended upon the Meteor Centre retail park in Derby on the 09/08/2020 at around 17:00 till 21:00. Its estimated that around 1000 people attended the event with very little social distancing being practiced amongst the crowds.

Derbyshire police were forced to monitor the event due to its scale and eventually began locking gates and blocking access to the retail park. An individual who appeared to manage the retail park had to use a disk cutter to release a locked gate so that police could prevent access to the site.

Once Derbyshire police began locking up the site, attendees began a mass exit due to fears they would be locked in the retail park.

The event had been planned last month in Stoke on Trent but police threatened anyone who attended would be fined and possibly have their car confiscated. The organizer then planned it for Nottingham but more issues prevented this. A derby car club member suggested the Meteor centre location last minute on Facebook and around 800 people confirmed they would attend with 2.7k confirming their interest.

A heavy smell of drugs, fuel and burnt rubber filled the air whilst attendees younge and old were entertained by regular loud bangs from exhaust pipes which were reminiscent of fireworks displays or a war zone.

Derbyshire Police said “ The force became aware that a car meet was to be held at the Meteor Centre, Derby, on Sunday evening. A number of officers attended to monitor the event, which was held on private land, with the first cars arriving at around 4.30pm. A large number of cars and people attended the event and there was some anti-social behaviour, including cars being revved at high volume, which led to a Section 34 dispersal notice being put in place at 7.10pm. By 8.45pm the car park was empty and officers resumed.

No arrests were made or tickets given.

Events such as this should of course be mindful of the current government guidance around social distancing and where groups do gather then they can and will be moved on. In this case a dispersal order was put in place due to anti-social behaviour and the event was ended before 9pm“.
