Beirut sees angry crowds gather outside parliament
Protesters gather outside the parliament in Beirut, Lebanon, on Sunday night (Aug 9) amid anger over the country's recent explosion. Thousands of residents filled the streets and chanted amid growing unrest in the country, which was further fuelled by the deadly blast last Tuesday left at least 157 dead and more than 5,000 injured.
Following the explosion, hundreds of people rallied amid anger over allegations of Government negligence that caused the blast. Protesters are demanding government resignation and also urged those responsible for the explosion to come forward.
The president of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse in the port area of the city.
In a region that was already struggling with economic and political unrest, many have accused the authorities of corruption, neglect and mismanagement.
