Furious protesters displayed rows of nooses during political unrest sparked by the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon.

Footage shows the crowds gathering near Matyr's Square on Sunday (August 9) at the installation comprised of several wooden gallows with ropes hanging from them.

They called for the government to resign over the explosion killed more than 200 people last Tuesday (Aug 4). There have since been violent clashes with police.

The president of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse in the port area of the city.

In a region that was already struggling with economic and political unrest, many have accused the authorities of corruption, neglect and mismanagement.

Apparently set off by a fire, the blast was by far the biggest in Lebanon’s troubled history and caused an estimated $10 billion to $15 billion in damage, according to the Beirut’s governor. It also damaged 6,200 buildings and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless.

The explosion was fueled by thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate that had been improperly stored at the city’s port for more than six years.
