Residents in the Philippines install mandatory COVID-19 wash basins on their street
A neighbourhood in the Philippines has self-imposed mandatory handwashing using portable basins before anyone could enter their street.
Concerned residents in Mandaluyong City helped build the recently-installed portable wash basin at the end of their street on August 11.
Footage shows village chief Dondon Francisco using the basins for the first time which they believe would add protection against them contracting the virus.
Dondon said that the idea started when he was analyzing the COVID-19 cases in his local administration.
He was thinking about the best way to curb the aggressive transmission of the virus and remembered the basic health protocol which is washing hands.
They had the idea for the first washing basin to be installed in every corner of the street within his jurisdiction.
They are operated with foot pedals to release water and soap. It is placed on the entrance of the village which is free for people.
Dondon said: "As a village official, I should find ways to help the national government to stop the spread of the virus. I believe this small way of initiative may flatten the curve, because this pandemic is no joke."
The Southeast Asian country has imposed the longest and one of the fiercest lockdowns in the world with almost 150,000 confirmed cases as of August 13.
