Officials from India's Forest Department rescued a baby rhino today (August 15th) which had been abandoned by its mother in northeastern India.

A team found the distressed creature close to Bagal village in the state of Assam and managed to safely transport it to a rescue centre.

According to officials, the young rhino was unwell when it arrived but after a good feed and some rest was said to be "doing fine" and is under observation.

The Indian rhinoceros is listed as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List
