The world’s most gorgeous stork? A pair of stunning Saddle-billed Storks fishing together.
Stunning Saddle-billed Storks (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) are near-endangered. They are very large birds, standing about 1.5 metres (59 inches) high, with a wingspan of 2.4-2.7 metres (7.9-8.9 feet). Saddle-billed Storks are monogamous and are thought to pair for life. Pairs hunt independently but are usually within sight of each other. They feed mainly on fish, but also take frogs, other vertebrates, crustaceans and aquatic insects. Male Saddle-billed Storks have a dark eye and two small yellow wattles at the base of the beak, while females have yellow eyes and no wattles. This pair was feeding on small fish on the Tsendze River Causeway in Kruger National Park accompanied by a large Nile Monitor (Varanus niloticus), who was also catching fish nearby.
