Buffaloes wait patiently for tired newborn calf to get up and walk with the herd

African Savanna or Cape Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) are highly social, with the core group in herds made up of groups of related females and their calves. This female-dominated herd came to the Mooiplaas trough to drink in the late afternoon, and one cow had a day-old calf. Buffaloes are highly protective of their young. When the herd began to move off from the drinking trough, the newborn calf lay down, too tired to walk, and the whole herd waited patiently for it to get up while watching us.
