This is the harrowing moment a Buddhist monk drove away with his pet dog tied to the back of the car for more than hour.

Phra Thonglea, 54, named the stay pooch 'Dark' after he adopted him from a temple in Sisaket, northeastern Thailand on August 18.

However, the monk put him in the boot of the car, which then flipped open as they drove away and the dog jumped out.

The dog's neck snapped from the jump and it was hanging by the leash. Shocked drivers noticed the hapless animal and recorded the incident.

Shocking footage shows how the monk continued seemingly driving without realising the dog was being dragged behind to its death. He said he only realised an hour later after reaching the destination.

The monk was later summoned for question and told police he did not realise that the leashed animal had jumped out of the vehicle while he was driving.

Pra Thonglea said he had collected Dam to keep as a pet. He had left the boot open so there was air for it to breath but he believes the dog jumped out of the moving car because it was afraid.

He said: "We did not hear the dog crying, so when we finally stopped the car we found that it was already dead with its tongue stuck in its throat.

"We thought the dog would be in danger if it lived together with other adult dogs in the temple so we adopted him and tried to move him to be safe."

The monk and his companion only found out about the dog an hour later when they reached their destination. The dog was then buried on his brother's yard.

Police Colonel Karom Boonsod, superintendent from Kantharalak police station said all related witnesses will be further questioned.

He said: "The monk has not been charged yet because we need to check all the supporting evidence first.''
