Water-loving Nile Monitor lizards basking, hunting and chasing in South Africa

Nile Monitors (Varanus niloticus) also known as Water Leguaans, are usually closely associated with freshwater and are found throughout most of sub-Saharan Africa.

They feed on fish, snails, frogs, small mammals, eggs and carrion. They are excellent climbers and swimmers and grow to over two meters (6.5 feet) in length. Nile Monitors are common in Kruger National Park.

These three lizards were close together on the downstream edge of the Tsendze River Causeway, hunting for small fish that were coming downstream, flicking their blue forked tongues to smell out prey. The monitors got along for a while, and the largest one charged at a smaller one, chasing it off into the sedges before returning to the causeway edge. (January 30, 2020)
