Two large wildfires, River Fire and Carmel Fire continued to burn in Monterey County, and thick layers of smoke from the fires turned the sky dark. The River Fire grew to 10,000 acres on Wednesday, August 19.

The smoke has reached multiple areas across California, prompting health concerns for sensitive groups statewide. The National Weather Service issued Air Quality Alerts for parts of Central California on August 19.
