Members of the public in Cape Town laid flowers to mark one year since the death of 19-year-old Uyinene Mrwetyana.

Uyinene was murdered by Luyanda Botha, a worker at the Claremont post office on 24 August 2019.

After killing Uyinene, Botha dumped her body in the township of Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha.

The murder of Uyinene sparked a series of protests against gender-based violence under the #AmiNext hashtag.

The protests culminated in brutal clashes between protesters and police at the World Economic Forum in Africa conference held in Cape Town during the same period.

The 19 year old University of Cape Town student, Uyinene Mrwetyana, who was murdered at the Claremont post office, was remembered by members of the public, who laid flowers outside the post office in memory of her.

Protesters demanded that President Cyril Ramaphosa and the government urgently address the scourge of gender-based violence in the country. Ramaphosa took time out from the World Economic Forum to address the thousands of protesters who had gathered outside parliament and he announced an intention declare a state of emergency to combat gender-based violence.
