Around 70 people were rescued near Khuniya Mahadev waterfall in Pavagadh, western India on Sunday (August 23) after severe flooding hit the area.

Local police conducted the rescue operation after the group, most of whom were tourists, became stranded when water level started to rise.

The Unesco-declared World Heritage Site had witnessed an influx of tourists over the weekend due to pleasant weather.

“When we received the message that 70 people were stuck due to the gushing waters. I informed the disaster management branch for help and reached the spot along with other cops and a rope,” said sub-inspector P.N. Singh of Pavagadh Police Station.

Around 70 people were rescued near Khuniya Mahadev waterfall in Pavagadh in Gujarat, western India.

The incident took place on August 23.

Local police conducted the rescue operation and brought them to a safe place.

The rescued persons, most of whom were tourists, were stranded as the water level in a ravine suddenly increased due to heavy rains in the area. 

The town housing the Unesco-declared World Heritage Site had witnessed heavy rush of tourists since Sunday morning due to pleasant weather and weekend. 

“When we received the message that 70 people were stuck due to the gushing waters, I informed the disaster management branch for help and reached the spot along with other cops and a rope,” said sub-inspector P N Singh of Pavagadh police station.
