African Giant Millipedes or Shongololos (Archispirostreptus gigas) is the largest living species of millipede in the world. They grow to about 38 centimetres (15 inches) in length and have about 256 (not one thousand) legs. Giant Millipedes eat fresh and rotting vegetable matter, and fungi. Unlike centipedes, they are not venomous, and in fact are rather docile as this video shows. However, if threatened they may roll into a tight spiral and exude an irritating liquid, which can be harmful to sensitive tissues such as the eyes and mouth. This Giant Millipede was found walking on the floor of a friend’s house in the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate.
