A fossil hunter in New Zealand showed off his discovery of a shell fossil dating back more than 34 million years, after stumbling upon it by a lake on August 22.

The filmer commented: "I was exploring a river in the mountains near Lake Tekapo, New Zealand and found a really nice fossil shell.

"I managed to extract it and then cleaned it up before being able to ID it using a publication with really good fossil shells illustrations. The fossil bed is late Eocene, around 34-million-years-old."
