Longer Version_Brave teenager fights off bike-borne mobile snatchers in northern India
A brave 15-year-old girl fought back two bike-borne mobile snatchers in northern India's Punjab. Despite being attacked with a sharp weapon, she managed to catch hold of one of them.
The incident took place in Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar near Jalandhar-Kapurthala road on August 30.
The entire episode was captured on CCTV camera which shows the pillion rider snatching the mobile phone from the unsuspecting girl, identified as Kusum. However, he seems unprepared for the fight the girl puts up. She catches hold of his clothes and refuses to let go even after receiving repeated blows from the sharp weapon.
The moment the girl let go of him, he proceeds to sit on the bike only to realise that she was not done yet. Kusum trails the bike and catches hold of him while resisting all the blows.
In time, a man intervenes to help her who still has one of the snatchers in her grip. Following this, one of the duo flees from the scene leaving his partner behind. Soon, several people gathered in the area to nab the miscreant.
According to reports, the girl suffered injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital for further treatment. The accused identified as Avinash Kumar has been handed over to the police for further investigation.
In recognition of exemplary courage and bravery shown by the teenager who foiled the snatching attempt despite sustaining severe wrist injury after being attacked by one of the accused the Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori has announced a cash award of Rs 51000 ($ 699) for the girl.
