A Dutch artist has used programmed a robotic attachment for a recorder that is able to play music autonomously.

Footage from August 14 shows the prototype a metal frame and plastic tubes that push air through what would usually be the mouthpiece.

The setup was part of an art installation and is heard playing the theme tune to the classic game "Tetris."

As the air enters the instrument, named Recorder Apprentice, a series of metal pieces are pushed down to cover the finger-holes that help play the correct notes.

Filmer Casper de Jong explained: "[This is] one of the first songs I taught to my Recorder Apprentice.

"This is some time ago, it now plays fully autonomous songs for people based on their facial expressions/emotions. They grow up so fast.

"The flute is an exploration of whether AI can learn [to] replicate human emotions with music and make compositions emotional by learning from our emotions.

"It does this by reading the expressions on our face and basing their composition to the emotion corresponding with our expression."
