A duo of ex-Myanmar soldiers have exposed first-hand the atrocities perpetrated by the army against the Rohingya people.

In documents obtained by The New York Times, the confessions of the two soldiers outline crimes such as blanket killings, rape and mass burials.

They revealed that they were told to "shoot everything they see" as they indiscriminately killed Rohingya and destroyed their villages.

The Rohingya people have faced systematic discrimination, statelessness and persecution for decades. According to OCHA, an estimated 745,000 Rohingya have fled into Bangladesh since 2017.

Although Bangladesh has been the first port of call, many Rohingya have now set out for other countries, including Indonesia.

Footage filmed on September 7 shows nearly 300 ethnic Rohingya in Lhokseumawe, Indonesia after they were rescued at sea by local fishermen.

Regional governments had repeatedly denied entry to the group before they were eventually rescued by after six months at sea.

A total of 104 men, 178 women and 14 children were rescued on Monday.

The group were evacuated to safety by military, police, and Indonesian Red Cross Volunteers.

The UNHCR is now collecting data on the migrants and coordinating with local government on how to relocate the group in accordance with local COVID-19 guidelines.
