5 rescued, 4 dead as building collapses in southern India

Following heavy rainfall, a two-storey building collapsed in southern India's Tamil Nadu on September 6 killing two women and two men

The incident took place on Chetty street of Coimbatore district on September 6.

Reportedly, five people have been rescued from the spot, who are being treated for their injuries.

Visuals from the accident site show the relief teams at work trying to locate people trapped in the rubble.

Several people can be seen being rushed out of the debris remains on a stretcher.

According to reports, the names of the dead were given as Gopalswami, 72, his wife Kasturiammal, 65, their son Manikandan, 42, and Swetha, 25.

District collector K Rajamani and city police commissioner Sumit Sharan also rushed to the spot.

According to police, heavy rainfall and strong winds weakened the structure.

The locality is within a containment zone where there were several COVID-19 cases. Police had a tough time controlling the crowd.
