Pilot whale pod seen in Iceland from shore

Buy video

a group of whales, a pod, is seen swimming in shallow waters in a fjord in western Iceland - right from the shore !

these are Pilot Whales.

they were 9 adults and a baby can also be glimpsed next to the largest adult.

They stayed in that fjord for many hours.

it was in a narrow and shallow fjord called Alftafjördur , which is southeast of Stykkisholmur in western Iceland.

road 54 , unpaved in that area, runs around the fjord and you could see the whales right from the roadside.

also a group of whooper swans is seen and heard flying over them.

Pilot whales can sometimes get stuck in shallow waters during low tide and die. Luckily it seems they were not in such danger. Wildlife specialists and guides from Laki Tours, a whale watching cruise company , came to verify that they were safe.

it is rather rare to see whales right from the shore. And seeing the baby with them was a real treat.
