10 pilot whales are seen in a fjord in western Iceland in shallow water, feeding on fish.

if you look closely you can see there are 9 big ones - and a baby !!! So cute and precious !

This was in the afternoon of september 10th, 2020 in a fjord southwest of Stykkisholmur on the north side of Snaefellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. They stayed there for hours and wildlife experts who had been informed about the sighting reported that they were still there on the following day. The fear was that they might end up stranded in the shallow water, but apparently they are doing fine.

Travellers in Iceland must currently go into quarantine for a certain number of days because of covid-19. Either 2 weeks of quarantine, or 5 days of quarantine with 2 covid-19 tests. However quarantine is not total isolation, not prison. You are allowed to go out , so if you choose to quarantine in an area known for seeing whales you might see them even though you are not allowed to go on a whale watching cruise as long as you are in quarantine.

Olafsvik and Grundarfjördur in the west, Holmavik in the NW, and Akureyri , Dalvik, Husavik in the north , are all hotspots for whalewatching .

Sadly many tourists cancel their trip to Iceland because they think that during quarantine they must stay locked down in their rooms. This is not true. www.covid.is tells you want you can't do , but also what you CAN do.
