India stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh without any announcement
India has stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh through Benapole port to curb the rise in onion prices in the Indian market. Onion exports stopped on Monday (September 14) morning.
C&F agent Kartik Chakraborty said this quoting Petrapole customs officials.
He said the recent heavy rains and floods in various parts of India have disrupted onion production in the areas where onion was grown. Due to which the supply of onion is reduced and the price of onion is increasing in the Indian market. The Indian government on Monday informed Petrapole Customs to stop the rise in onion prices. According to him, the customs authorities have informed them that the export of all types of onions will be stopped from Monday until further orders. An official notification in this regard has not been issued yet, but it will be issued soon, he said. At the same time, no onion will be exported against the LCs which are open for onion import and the tender process has been completed.
Sajedur Rahman, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agent Staff Association, said that after two trucks of onions entered Bangladesh on Monday morning, they were suddenly informed by the Indian government at 11 a.m. that Indian customs authorities had told them that no more trucks would enter Bangladesh. This will cause losses to many importers.
Saiful Islam, an onion importer, said, "In the afternoon, Indian exporters and C&F agents informed us that India would not export any onions." The government of India has also banned customs from exporting onions and has also told us not to export onions. Because of their decision, many of our importers have opened LCs to import huge quantities of onions.
