Prime Minister Narendra Modi's face embroidered by southern Indian weavers
Saree weavers embroidered Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's face on 6-foot-long cloth on the occasion his birthday while putting forward their demands pertaining to the betterment of the natural fiber weavers in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The incident took place in Anakaputhur of Chennai on September 16 morning.
The video shows several women weaving the saree with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s face embroidered on it along with the message.
According to reports, the weavers have been weaving sarees using numerous natural fibers like banana fiber, coconut fiber, bamboo fiber and pineapple fiber.
They have been weaving natural fiber sarees for about 15 years now and have been won many awards and recognitions.
The price range varies from 17 USD (1200 Rs) to 102 USD (7500 Rs) with multicolored designs by creating dyes from mistletoe, turmeric, sandalwood, lime, charcoal, fruits, vegetables, strips and soaking it in fibers.
It is said that they earn about 136 USD (10000 Rs) a month which is not enough for them to develop their business and sustain their lives.
They have been facing more problems due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and are sending the embroidered saree to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his birthday along with their demands and concerns which would help them get their demands heard.
Sehgar, the chairman of Natural Fiber Weavers Group demands that if the central government provides them with subsidies and space, they can improve the natural fibre weaving industry and restore their livelihood.
