A man, who was rendered conscious, kept on talking during a complex brain surgery in northern India's Rajasthan.

The operation was performed in Mittal Hospital And research Centre of Ajmer on September 9.

Thirty-year-old Savar Ram, a resident of Jaitaran developed a brain tumour on the left side of his brain. He had complained of headache along with weakness on the right side of his body. He also suffered from epileptic seizures for a month before the surgery.

Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Siddharth Verma removed the tumour under the government's Ayushman Bharat Mahatma Gandhi Rajasthan Health Insurance Scheme. Ram received the treatment free of cost.

Visuals show Ram talking to the hospital staff while the doctor performs the critical surgery. The staff constantly asked him if he felt pain and tried to keep him awake.

According to Dr Verma, this was done because the tumour was near the voice controlling area of the brain.

There was a high risk of the patient being rendered voiceless in the removal of this tumour. Hence the operation was executed without making the patient unconscious.

The patient was given local anaesthesia for the surgery.

This operation requires technical proficiency and skilled experience of the entire team. It was achieved with the support of the hospital's anesthesiologist Dr Rajeev Pandey and OT technical staff Aamir, Asif, Bhagwan, Rameshwar Singh and Hema.

The method known as awake craniotomy is mainly used for mapping and resection of lesions in vitally important brain areas where imaging is not sufficiently sensitive. These are the most common speech and motor areas of the brain.
