Annual SS Richard Montgomery shipwreck sonar survey in Thames, UK

Buy video

Footage of the small white survey vessel 'EGS Watchful' undertaking the annual sonar survey of the shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery lying in the Thames 1.5 miles north of Sheerness in Kent today (September 22).

The survey boat bounces sound waves under the sea which are reflected back off the submerged wreck, which are then processed by a computer to form a 3D image of the deteriorating hull.

The Maritime & Coastguard agency produce a yearly survey report on the condition of the vessel, which sank in 1944 with an estimated 1400 tonnes of munitions still onboard, making it one of the UK's most dangerous shipwrecks.
