A bamboo raft is being used in a canal to trap floating rubbish in Thailand.

The naturally-sourced rafts were placed along Khlong Prem Prachakorn, a 12kilometre stretch canal, that connects Bangkok and Ayutthaya province.

Just last year, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration collected 46,507 tonnes of pollution and garbage in the canals within the city that are believed to have come from the residential and commercial buildings lining it.

The local government has already built four rafts, each 3kilometres in length. It plans to add more across Bangkok's 1,319kilometre long canals.

Footage shows how the devices trap the rubbish floating on the surface of the waterways to prevent if from flowing downstream.

City Clerk Silpasuay Raweesaengsoon told local media the bamboo rafts were being introduced alongside more waste collection points.

He added: "We will also introduce more equipment to improve water circulation along the canal, as well as regular water quality testing."
