Exquisite endangered Rock Wallabies at home

The beautiful, agile Black-flanked (or Black-footed) Rock Wallaby (Petrogale lateralis) is listed as a threatened species under State and Australian Government legislation. There are four subspecies recognised, and these are found in widely scattered rocky locations in the western half of Australia. The main threats to Black-flanked Rock Wallabies are predation by introduced foxes, wild dogs and cats, competition for food with introduced herbivores such as wild goats, habitat loss and limited genetic variation because of their fragmented, small populations. Black-flanked Rock Wallabies are active mostly at night to escape both heat and predators in their rocky habitats, although these wallabies emerged to bask in the late afternoon sun. They feed on a range of herbs, grasses, leaves, seeds and fruit, and browse close to rocky refuges to escape predators. The Wallaby family comprised a large male with chunks of fur missing, a female with a Joey in her pouch and a young Wallaby “at heel” – out of the pouch but still with its mother.
