Social distancing seemed to be ignored as two million Indians across the state of Rajasthan lined up to vote in local elections.

Footage from September 28 shows dozens of locals cramming into a polling station to register their votes.

The State Election Commission said it had issued guidelines to enforce protocols like social distancing, wearing of face masks and sanitisation in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There might have been isolated incidents of violation of social distancing, but by and large, the protocols were followed," said election commission secretary Shyam Singh Rajpurohit.

Over two million Indians lined up to vote to elect local government representatives in the Indian state of Rajasthan on September 28.

The State Election Commission said it had issued guidelines to enforce protocols like social distancing, wearing of masks and sanitisation in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But reports from many polling stations said the protocols were violated.

At Tatija village in Jhunjhunu district men and women voters crowded the polling booth showing scant disregard for social distancing.

However, officials described these incidents as an aberration.

"There might have been isolated incidents of violation of social distancing, but by and large, the protocols were followed," said election commission secretary Shyam Singh Rajpurohit.


On September 28, about 2.6 million people cast their vote to elect 947 local government officials.
