Mesmerising video footage shows wild mushrooms releasing colourful spores into the air.

Onlooker Jojo Villareal recorded the mystical toadstool during his night foraging adventures in Bicol province, the Philippines on September 19.

The two mushrooms were seen releasing spores that showed a magnificent variety of iridescent colours.

Nature lover Jojo said that he only used a white headlight to film the beautiful spores and did not put artificial colouring.

The mushrooms reminded him of a ''fairytale'', he said.

Jojo added: "It was so magical when I saw it. It was dark in the forest, but who knew that such colourful things could happen on the ground.''

Mushrooms grow from spores and not from seeds. These spores are released into the air but they are so tiny that they are almost invisible to the naked eye.

Rather than soil, these spores rely on substances like sawdust, grain, straw, or wood chips for nourishment after. they land on the ground.

Toadstools is a term used interchangeably with mushrooms, but generally refers to a kind of mushroom that is poisonous and should not be eaten.
