A rare bird in Yorkshire is making headlines this week. A Eurasian Hoopoe (Upupidae) was filmed today (1st October) in Collingham near Wetherby, after being sighted a couple of days ago. Since it's arrival, ornithologists and twitchers have flocked to the area in hope of getting a glimpse of the rare bird which is feeding on residents driveways on Millbeck Green.
According to some sources, the Hoopoe was last sighted in the Leeds area around 40 years ago.
The Hoopoe is an exotic looking bird that is the size of a mistle thrush. It has a pinkish-brown body, striking black and white wings, a long black downcurved bill, and a long pinkish-brown crest which it raises when excited. They are normally found in warmer countries such as Africa, Asia & Europe.
