Fire rages after a tanker belonging to a Mexican state-owned petroleum company crashed into a minivan transporting car company workers and exploded in Mexico on Wednesday evening (September 30).

The Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex) vehicle holding around 30 thousand litres of fuel hit a minivan with staff from the South Korean company Hyundai at an intersection at around 7:30pm in Rosarito, Baja California.

There were reportedly 16 Hyundai staff inside. They were rushed to hospital with one person said to be in a serious condition.

Three fire trucks and doctors travelled to the area to attend to the emergency.

Francisco Arellano, director of the Municipal Police of Playas de Rosarito, said the accident occurred at 7:30 p.m.

He said both vehicles skidded before the collision, which happened in front of several shops, which were evacuated.

According to the authorities' report, the driver of the Pemex tanker was saved by wearing a seatbelt, although he suffered minor injuries.
