Weaved rattan coffins made in Central Java, Indonesia are proving to be popular within European markets due to their environmental benefits.

Footage filmed on October 2 shows craftsmen constructing the coffins which take two days to make and are meant to be easily destroyed when buried.

The coffins are sold abroad, especially in European countries, such as Germany, England, the Netherlands, and a number of other countries.

Coffin maker Natianingsih said: "We do not sell domestically, because it is considered too expensive. For one box we sell around 2 million to 3 million rupiahs depending on the complexity of the weaving.

"For our work, from start to finish, on average, it takes us about two days depending on the level of complexity of the weaving requested.

"At the start of the pandemic we shipped eight to nine containers, the number increased by 50 percent. Most of them ordered a lot to do stock and were afraid that in Indonesia it would be locked down first."
