Fisherman killed in freak accident when truck skids off road crashing into pond
A fisherman was killed in a freak accident when a truck driver allegedly fell asleep and ploughed into a pond.
Phairat Anuphan, 54, was fishing with his wife when the out-of-control six-wheeler truck skidded off the road towards them.
Shocking dashcam footage shows the truck losing control before veering into thick bushes in Prachin Buri, central Thailand on September 30.
Phairat was killed when the heavy lorry dragged him into water. The driver came round from the crash before emerging unscathed and climbing out of the vehicle.
The fisherman's wife, Booncham, 57, said she was collecting water plants nearby and ran towards where her husband when she heard the truck cutting through the tall grasses.
The shocked wife called the emergency services who arrived at the scene with two crane trucks to pull the vehicle out of the water.
Booncham said: "We live near the pond so often go there to catch fish and collect plants to sell in the market. I could not believe that my husband would be killed while doing that.''
After almost an hour, the rescuers were able to lift the truck out of the pond and the man's body was found trapped under the left rear wheel.
The rescuers took the body to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
The driver, Bandit Kaewpruksa, 35, reportedly said he was travelling to a factory in the nearby province when he dozed off along the way.
He was taken to the local police station for questioning over the incident.
