Akshay Kumar, a resident of Dhanegaon village in Maharashtra, western India, discovered a cobra living inside the wall above the main door of his family home.

Informed by his 8-year-old neighbour, Kumar didn't take him seriously until he started to hear a hissing sound whenever he opened or closed the door.

Fearing for the safety of his family, Kumar called Animal Rescue Society, whose team led by Akash Jadhav rushed to the scene.

Unnerving footage from September 2019 shows the fully grown male cobra living in the cracks of the stones in his century-old home.

Jadhav prodded the spot where the snake was last seen before the cobra emerged hissing angrily. Another team member distracted the cobra with a snake bag, while Jadhav dislodged it.

“The plan was to remove the stones to free up space and then pull the cobra out of its hiding place,” said Jadhav.

However, the stones were too heavy to remove easily and the cobra was hiding too deep inside the wall.

“After nearly two hours of effort, we found that the cobra was not budging. It was also very dangerous as the cobra came close to striking me a few times,” Jadhav explained.

Eventually, the team coaxed the cobra into a plastic pipe, which acted as a safe passage for its rescue.

As it was captured, the cobra regurgitated a sparrow it had preyed upon earlier before it was released into the wild.

Akshay Kumar, a resident of Danegaon village near Ahmednagar in Western India, was told by a neighbour’s son that a cobra lived in the wall above the main door at his home.

Kumar didn’t take the words of the eight-year-old seriously, till he himself started hearing a hissing sound whenever he opened or closed the door.

Fearing for the safety of his family, Kumar called Animal Rescue Society, whose members led by Akash Jadhav rushed to the spot.

They found that the cracks in the century-old massive home built with stones offered a perfect hiding place for a snake, which could hunt rodents and birds in peace.

As Akash poked the spot where the snake was seen, a fully grown adult male cobra emerged hissing angrily ready to strike at anyone who got too close.

A team member kept the cobra distracted with a snake bag, while Akash tried to dislodge it.

“The plan was to remove the stones to free up the space and and then pull the cobra out of its hiding place,” said Akash.


But the stones prove to be very heavy to remove easily and the cobra too deep inside for the plan to work.

“After nearly two hours of effort we found that the cobra was not budging. It was also very dangerous as the cobra came close to striking me a few times,” said Akash.

The team thought out of the box and borrowed a plastic pipe from a neighbour and persuaded the snake to get in.

Thinking that the pipe was a dark tunnel that offered safe passage, the snake obliged. As it was captured, the cobra regurgitated a sparrow it had preyed upon earlier in the day.

It was released in the wild later.
