Residents battle to salvage their possessions after heavy rains caused floods in their homes in the Philippines.

Hundreds of homes were submerged after torrential rains hit the south of the country.

Footage shows a flooded residential area in Paknaan, Mandaue City, on October 4 where residents are seen salvaging their belongings from the water, which was up to 4ft deep in some parts.

A local said their area is hit by massive flooding every year so they are asking the local government to build barriers around the Butuanon river.

He said: "Our properties are damaged because of the flash floods every year. A structure around the river would help us, I hope it will be built soon."

Officials said around 500 homes were flooded. The displaced residents also complained of the foul smell of the water that came from the river.

Families were also evacuated to nearby schools as the muddy torrents filled their homes.

The Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Thailand and Malaysia are at the peak of the annual rainy season, which sees regular tropical storms.
