Protesters gathered in clashes with police in Indonesia when thousands of students and workers staged a demonstration in Medan, North Sumatra on October 8, 2020, in which all of Indonesia on Thursday opposed a new law which they said would cripple labor rights and Damaging the environment.

A job creation law approved by Parliament on Monday is expected to substantially change Indonesia's labor and natural resource management systems. It amends 79 previous laws and is intended to increase bureaucratic efficiency as part of President Joko Widodo's administration's efforts to attract more investment to the country.

Demonstrators say the law will hurt workers by reducing severance pay, removing restrictions on manual labor by foreign workers, increasing the use of outsourcing and changing the monthly wage to hourly wages.
