A set of conjoined twins facing financial constraints are not being able to get aids to support their surgery in northern India's Uttar Pradesh. The twins were born in November 2019 in Kushinagar village Balua.

Visuals show the 11-month-old children in their grandfather's lap. They seem to have difficulty walking together. Both of their spines and necks have also started to bear the brunt of the condition.

A very rare phenomenon, the conjoined twins' occurrence is estimated to range from one in 49,000 to one in 189,000 births, with a somewhat higher incidence in Southwest Asia and Africa. Approximately half of the births are stillborn, and an additional one-third die within 24 hours.

Due to economic constraints coupled with the coronavirus pandemic, the twins' family is unable to get surgery done for these twins who happen to be joined at their abdominal area.

In an interview, the 26-year-old twins' father Chandan said, " I work as a farmer as well as a labourer. I earn Rs 9,000 to 10,000 in a month working every odd job I can get my hands on. I was very happy to become a father to the pair of twins, but when I realised the condition they were suffering from, I was disheartened. Their upbringing became very troublesome for us."

He further added, "Most doctors in my hometown refused to operate on my set of twins saying they can not take the risk. I then approached a hospital in Lucknow when the twins were about seven days old. They told me that the kids were too young for the operation and that I come after they turn at least three-months-old. Now my kids are over 11 months old but I have not been able to gather the required amount of funds for their surgery. Doctors have stated that the procedure will become complicated after the children complete a year of age."

With folded hands Chandan has requested people to come forward and help him give a life to his children that they deserve. Time is running out and he is in immediate need of the funds to conduct the operation within a month's time.

Currently, a crowdfunding organization 'Milaap' is raising funds for the twins so they can be operated well within time.

Milaap is an online crowdfunding platform that enables anyone across India to raise funds for healthcare, education, sports, disaster relief and other personal causes, with great ease.
