‘Dagga Boys’ – old male Buffaloes enjoy their wallow until disturbed by a truck

African Savanna Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) are one of Africa’s most dangerous large animals, mainly because of their unpredictable temperaments. African Buffaloes need to drink each day, so are often found close to water. Older males (often called ‘Dagga Boys’) leave the herd when they can no longer compete with younger, stronger males and often stay together in small groups of two or three. African Buffaloes are plagued by ticks and biting flies, and often lie in mud baths to cool off and to coat their hides with mud to reduce the numbers of irritating parasites. These two old Dagga Boys were enjoying their wallow on the edge of the road near the Phabeni Gate in Kruger National Park, when a passing truck disturbed one of them. He got up, then flopped down in the wallow again.
