A frenzy followed rumours that it rained gold coins near Bangalore, India, on Saturday 10 October.

The rumour spread in villages in Bagalur about 23 miles (38km) from Bangalore that it had rained gold coins that afternoon.

Many people then rushed to the spot and started digging, blocking traffic.

A few people even found what looked like tiny gold coins, but local police, who tried to control the crowd, insisted they did not get there by raining from the sky and that they were probably fake.

They have sent the gold for testing but said there were many criminal gangs in the area offering fake treasure, and that they may have disposed some of their goods on the road side.

Recent local TV reports of rumours of gold rain in Surat in Gujarat, may also have contributed to this rumour starting.
