A three-year-old boy had to be rescued after getting his thumb was stuck in an empty energy drink bottle while he was playing with it.

Nong Dew picked up the empty glass bottle from the rubbish bin outside his family's home in Chainat, central Thailand and used it as a toy on October 7.

The curious toddler played with the bottle for a while before putting his thumb into the hole, where it became wedged in the narrow gap.

Nong Dew's grandmother panicked when he saw the boy's finger turning violet from being pinched by the bottle's narrow mouth and rushed him to the hospital.

The grandmother said: "I did not hear my grandson cry when I arrived home from the backyard farm. He was just sitting still. I was shocked when I saw his finger stuck in the bottle with blood."

The medics immediately poured oil in the boy's hand put a plastic bag around to lubricate the fingers but to no avail.

They called a gardener working at the hospital that day to help them cut the mouth of the bottle and free the already wounded thumb.

After 30 minutes, portions of the glass bottle were cut out and his wounds were treated by the nurse attending him.

The boy and his grandmother thanked the nurses and the gardener who helped his thumb out of the bottle and promised not to play with bottles again.
