A man has been arrested for forcing his wife to live under inhumane conditions and locking her up inside a toilet for a year and a half in the Indian state of Haryana.

The woman was rescued on October 14 in Rishipur village, Panipa district.

Sub-inspector Surender Dahiya said a case was registered against the accused Naresh Kumar.

The couple have been married for the last 17 years and have three children, a 16-year-old son and two daughters, aged 15 and 11.

An official from the district's women and child welfare department said a team was deployed to the house with the police after receiving information that the 35-year-old woman was held captive by her husband.

They found her locked inside the toilet.

During the investigation, it was found that she was forced to live in inhumane conditions for the past year and a half. She was not provided with proper food and drinking water.

Her husband claimed that the woman was suffering from mental health issues.

However, the woman was able to identify all family members and replied to the questions asked by the team.
