Roadside artist carves figurines out of coconut in southern India
This roadside artist makes ends meet by selling figurines that he carves out of dry coconut in Bengaluru city, southern India.
58-year-old Chandrappa has been making a living by selling his art on the side of the street for almost 20 years.
The clip from July 24 shows Chandrappa carving the figurine of a monkey onto a coconut shell.
"I have been making my living carving coconut for almost 20-years since this is the only talent I have," Chandrappa said.
"I make figurines that are mostly in demand by the customers. The figurines of Buddha and Lord Ganesha are the ones that sell the most."
He continued: "I take almost two to three hours making one figurine. In the initial years, when I started the job, it used to take me hours, but with experience, now I can finish the art by about two and a half hours."
His work sells for almost 350 INR each ($5.50), and every day he carves at least three figurines, which he guarantees will stay intact for 15 years.
