This is the amusing moment stranded teachers rode rubber rings along the river rapids while travelling home from a remote village in the mountains.

Teacher Daisy Mae Anthony Paala had just finished their two-mile hike from the indigenous tribe Mangyan’s village when they were unable to cross the swollen river in Oriental Mindoro, the Philippines on October 8.

The teachers - who normally wade through the knee-deep water - worried that they would not be able to return home that day.

However, a kind local, Noli Balontong, 54, who is the father of one of the volunteer teachers, offered to go back and take a ''timbulan'', or a black floater.

Daisy said: ''We suddenly became hopeful because of the floater. There was no mobile reception in the area so we would not have been able to contact our families in case we needed to stay a few more days.''

The teachers secured their school materials inside plastic bags and hopped on the rubber ring before drifting along the river rapids.

The kind father Noli assisted the floater on the side so it would not lose balance and be swept too far away from the banks.

They were able to reach the main roads in half the normal travel time safely and reached their homes before the evening.

The floater was owned by the villagers who usually ride it in case the river overflows.

Crossing it would be too dangerous because of the sharp rocks and strong currents, but the villagers found that drifting along it would be a safer and faster way to travel.

Schools in the Philippines have switched to online classes due to the pandemic, but remote areas without internet access will have to use printed learning modules.

The textbooks and other materials are prepared by teachers and delivered to the students’ homes, usually in mountain villages.
