One woman was killed and two men injured after a train hit a car on a level crossing, just days after a similar crash killed 19 people, in Thailand.

The three friends were driving home on Thursday night (October 15). A train smashed into their vehicle after crushing against the metal beams of a bridge being built in Phetchaburi province, when they were passing through the unguarded level crossing without barriers at around 9:30 pm.

Rescue teams found factory worker Thitichaya Yaemkesorn, 21, dead at the scene. Two men, Theerayuth Khuenta, 39, and Bundit Charoensap, 33 were cut from the wreckage and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Narong Phraibua, investigation chief at Khao Yoi district police station, arrived at the scene with the emergency paramedics around 10 pm.

He said there was a Toyota Vios found upended against the base of a bridge being built over the line. The rescuers spent more than thirty minutes taking the two injured motorists out before they were rushed to the hospital.

Lieutenant Colonel Phraibua said the three employees worked at the Royal Plus factory, which produces bottled fruit juice.

He said: "The three victims had been to a restaurant and they were travelling home when they crossed the Bangkok-Surat Thani special express railway and the fatal crash occurred."

Phetchaburi police will investigate the cause of the crash by checking CCTV footage and interviewing the two men if they have recovered.

The accident comes just four days after 18 passengers and the bus driver were killed when their vehicle was hit by an oncoming train on a crossing in Chachoengsao province on Sunday (October 11).

Responding to the crash, Thailand's Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said this week that he would issue an order to have all railway crossings across the country installed with barriers and signals.
