Anti-government protesters gathered outside the police headquarters in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand on Friday (October 16) calling for the release of protest leaders.

Crowds waved signs and shouted slogans calling for the release of human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa and political activist Prasit Khrutharoj.

The pair were arrested during a crackdown on protests that have grown in recent months. Large rallies have taken place in the capital Bangkok since Tuesday.

Supporters gathered outside the police station chanted "free our friends" and other anti-government slogans.

Police said that Arnon and Prasit will not be granted bail.

Thai anti-government and pro-democracy protests have grown since the start of the year and can be seen in big provinces around Thailand.

Activists are calling for the resignation of the prime minister, constitutional changes, and reform of the monarchy.
