'The north is not a petri dish': Anti-government graffiti appears in Manchester

An anti-government and lockdown graffiti has appeared in Manchester, UK as talks between Greater Manchester leaders and the government over putting the region into tier three have stalled.

Footage from Friday (October 16) shows a wall in the city's Piccadilly Gardens adorned with the words "THE NORTH IS NOT A PETRI DISH" and "FULL PAY."

It comes after Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham gave an impassioned speech where he described Downing Street's strategy unfair towards northern regions.

He said in a speech yesterday: “We have to protect the health of the nation but let’s do it as one nation, and not make the north of England the sacrificial lamb for an ill-thought-through Downing Street policy which doesn’t make sense in the real world.”

Greater Manchester is currently placed in tier two.
